Fictional Selves
Kyle MacLachlan is hosting this year’s National Book Awards, and his debut memoir is how we’re getting ready. It runs from David Lynch’s Dune to Blue Velvet to Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks, with Sex and the City and Fallout along the way. The publisher calls it a book of doppelgangers, with MacLachlan mirrored by his own ego, “Other Kyle,” and by the characters he’s played. It promises stories about collaborators like Lynch and Laura Dern, plus hard-won lessons on ambition, love, and fatherhood. For Twin Peaks fans and anyone who likes a Hollywood memoir a little strange.
Publisher’s description at Penguin Random House. Ceremony details from the National Book Foundation.
MacLachlan hosts the 2026 National Book Awards ceremony on November 18, livestreamed free at 8 PM ET. For Lynch fans, this is Agent Cooper telling it in his own words.
