My Grandfather's Gallery by Anne Sinclair

My Grandfather's Gallery

Anne Sinclair • Translated by Shaun Whiteside • Memoir • Picador paperback • ISBN 9781250074775

On September 20, 1940, Paul Rosenberg stepped off a ship in New York, one of hundreds of Jewish refugees fleeing Vichy France. He had been the Paris dealer for Picasso, Matisse and Braque, at 21 rue La Boétie. He saved his family, but dozens of his paintings were seized by the Nazis. More than half a century later, his granddaughter Anne Sinclair opened a box of letters and went looking for the man behind the legend. Her memoir is a love letter, a reckoning and a record of what was taken.

We picked this up after Whitehot Magazine's review of Raphaël Denis's Fates of Works at Bienvenu Steinberg & C, his first New York show. It centers on a five-volume artist's book tracing the works that passed through Rosenberg's gallery and the more than 300 looted by the Nazis, and includes a scorched bookshelf honoring a library of books the Third Reich sent to the bonfires. Sinclair's memoir is the family side of that same story.
