The Disappearers by Marlon James

The Disappearers

Marlon James • Novel • 2026 • Shortlisted for the 2026 Booker Prize

Kingston, Jamaica, 1988. Eight men who barely know each other start rehearsing a play. All of them are gay, and all of them know what that can cost. One night a mob attacks them and one of the men is killed. The survivors heal in different ways: some try to bury it, and others want payback. James won the Booker in 2015 with A Brief History of Seven Killings.

A page-turner that takes a hard, clear look at queer life in Jamaica in the 1980s and '90s.

The Booker judges said: “A book that examines territory Caribbean literature has rarely dared to occupy, as what begins as a theatrical story becomes something closer to a reckoning. James is a singular literary talent.”
